Monk Life: Photos from around the monastery

These beautiful days in June are some of the best to enjoy within the context of community life- life with others. I have appreciated the nice weather and the extended daylight. After supper each evening, the monks gather outside for recreation. I captured some pictures of scenes around the monastery, including real-life monks in their […]

Family Retreat

The Abbey Guest Center hosted its 10th annual Family Retreat. We had several families here with many children running around campus with excitement. “Pentecost” was the theme for this year’s retreat. I helped out by giving a couple of talks, focusing on the fruits of the Holy Spirit. I also helped organize the scavenger hunt […]

Lent Begins

Abbot Benedict presided at Mass for Ash Wednesday. At Mass we prayed in the Opening Prayer: Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service, so that, as we take up battle against spiritual evils, we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint. Each year, in preparation for Lent, each […]

Preparing for Christmas

These upcoming holy days need lots of preparation, both interiorly (spiritually) and exteriorly (decorations). A group of local youth (my Bible Study group) came to the Abbey Saturday afternoon for Mass, lunch, Day Prayer, cards, quiet time, and Adoration and confession. It was an enjoyable afternoon helping them prepare for Christmas. The monks have been […]

Giving Tuesday

Conception Abbey and Seminary College has participated in the Giving Tuesday event for several years. Monks, seminarians, employees, friends and neighbors gather in St. Raphael Hall (the Welcome Center) to donate and wrap gifts, make blankets and stuffed animals, decorate ornaments, and write Christmas cards which will be sent to people in need this Christmas. […]

More Fall Colors

These past few days have proven to be one of the most beautiful fall seasons that I can remember. The leaves are especially vibrant, and this weekend we have enjoyed temperatures in the mid-60’s. We had our share or cloudy and rainy days, but the trees are in all their glory and beauty. Nothing says […]

Vocation Work

This past weekend I traveled to Oklahoma to do promote monastic vocations at the Catholic Center on the campus of Oklahoma State University. My classmate, Fr. Kerry Wakulich, is pastor at St. John’s Catholic Student Center and he is always welcoming to the monks of Conception Abbey. What do you do when you travel to […]

Bible Study

On Wednesday evenings after ministry at the Newman Center at Northwest Missouri State University, I lead a Bible Study for ten college age men and women. The group is comprised of kids all who have graduated from Jefferson High School (Conception Junction, MO) in the past few years. Jefferson High School is less than 2 […]

End of August

How did we get to the end of August? I flew the drone yesterday to capture some wonderful aerial pictures. Even though we had such a dry summer, recent rains have really greened up the campus. Below: The novices and juniors playing cards and being goofy one evening. Above: Marian statue and grotto near the […]

3 Men Clothed as Novices

“Come, Follow Me.” Just as Jesus once spoke this invitation to his Apostles, three young men discerned that God was leading them to try monastic life at Conception Abbey. The monks of Conception Abbey clothed with the monastic habit and scapular three new novices on Tuesday, August 14.  These candidates, Cole Johnson, Casey Vandersnick, and […]
